Stop Obsessing over Averages


If you have insecurities about your academic abilities or future, chances are you probably spend a lot of time analyzing statistics like the average incomes of different majors, average IQ of different majors, and average GPA of different majors just to see where you match up.
Averages don’t mean anything because they’re an abstract, mathematical number that reflects how an ordinary person performs. You are not ordinary because you have a combination of traits that make you more suited for some subjects and less suited for other subjects.
The average student is not as smart or brilliant as you think: they’re just scrapping by and barely studying to get through their classes. But if you pick something you’re passionate about, you’ll do more work without being bothered by it and far exceed the average.
