🧠 New MRI Scanner Maps the Brain’s Wiring in Stunning Detail
A team funded by the NIH has unveiled Connectome 2.0, a cutting-edge MRI scanner capable of visualizing the brain’s microscopic wiring in living humans, something previously only possible in postmortem studies or animals.
Unlike conventional MRI, this next-gen system hugs the head tightly and features many more channels, giving it the power to capture ultra-sharp, nearly cell-level images. That clarity allows researchers to trace the brain’s connectome: the intricate network of neural connections that underlie thought, behavior, and mental illness.
Researchers confirmed its safety in healthy volunteers and used it to reveal subtle brain differences, such as axon size and microstructural variation between individuals.

⚛️ 1911: Rutherford Overturns the Atom
In 1909, Ernest Rutherford assigned a seemingly routine experiment to a student, Ernest Marsden. What Marsden found changed physics forever: alpha particles were bouncing backward off gold foil which is a shocking result no one expected.
Rutherford’s bold explanation came in 1911: atoms aren’t blobs of charge like the “plum pudding” model claimed. Instead, nearly all the mass and positive charge are packed into a tiny, dense nucleus, with electrons orbiting around it. The atom, it turned out, is mostly empty space.
This planetary model of the atom introduced a new scale of structure at 100,000 times smaller than the atom itself. Though it clashed with classical physics, it laid the foundation for Bohr’s quantum atom and the development of quantum mechanics.
