Earn Over $7,000 Doing Computing This Summer at Salisbury University

The EXERCISE REU invites undergraduates to explore parallel and distributed computing in real-world science and engineering projects while earning a stipend, housing, and hands-on mentorship.

What’s Happening Today!

Welcome to a daily drop from That Black Chemist!

Salisbury University is running its inaugural EXERCISE REU—Explore Emerging Computing in Science and Engineering. This 10-week summer program immerses undergraduates in parallel computing, including GPU and distributed computing, tackling real-world problems in networks, image processing, and GIS. Participants receive a $7,000 stipend, travel support, and on-campus housing while working closely with faculty mentors on cutting-edge projects.

Meanwhile, the NSF just announced its $30 million Translation to Practice (TTP) program, designed to bridge the gap between lab discoveries and real-world impact. Researchers can explore, translate, or partner on innovative technologies, from startups to open-source tools, all while advancing cross-sector collaborations and entrepreneurial skills. This initiative promises to accelerate science and engineering breakthroughs into practical solutions for society.

💡 NSF Launches $30M Program to Turn Lab Discoveries into Real-World Solutions

The National Science Foundation (NSF) is investing $30 million in the new Translation to Practice (TTP) program, designed to help researchers move innovations from the lab into practical use. The initiative emphasizes cross-sector collaboration, entrepreneurial education, and flexible pathways for translating scientific discoveries into technology, standards, startups, or open-source solutions.

NSF TTP offers three distinct tracks:

  • Explore (TTP-E): Supports “high-risk” use-inspired research that bridges curiosity-driven science and real-world applications.

  • Translate (TTP-T): Focuses on maturing prior research into scalable, impactful technologies with commercial, societal, or economic benefits.

  • Partner (TTP-P): Funds multi-disciplinary teams working with industry, government, or philanthropic partners to develop complex translational projects.

The program builds on lessons from previous NSF initiatives like Partnerships for Innovation, offering broader translational goals and flexible entry points. NSF aims to accelerate the journey from discovery to market and society, helping U.S. researchers bring practical innovations to life.

Tip of the Day

💰 Stretch Your Grad School Budget Without Sacrificing Success

Grad school is expensive, but small strategies can make a big difference in your wallet. Here’s how to save money while staying focused on your research and career:

  • Buy in Bulk & Share: Order lab supplies, notebooks, or snacks in bulk with lab mates to cut costs per item. Sharing resources reduces waste and keeps everyone stocked.

  • Leverage University Resources: Use campus software licenses, printers, and library materials instead of buying personal copies. Many universities provide free or discounted access to expensive tools.

  • Cook & Meal Prep: Eating out every day adds up fast. Batch-cooking and prepping meals saves money and ensures you eat healthier, too.

  • Track & Plan Expenses: Keep a simple budget or spreadsheet to monitor spending. Knowing where your money goes helps you identify areas to cut back without feeling deprived.

  • DIY Where Possible: Need simple lab setups or office tools? Repurpose materials, 3D-print, or build inexpensive alternatives before purchasing costly commercial versions.
