The Cooperative Institute for Modeling the Earth System (CIMES) is now accepting applications for its 2025 Summer Research Internship Program at Princeton University. Over the course of 8–10 weeks, undergraduates will collaborate with leading climate scientists on projects in oceanography, atmospheric dynamics, and computational modeling. Participants receive a $6,000 stipend, housing, and the opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge climate research that informs global policy.

Meanwhile, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) have announced a new joint initiative in quantum technologies. This transatlantic program will fund U.S.–U.K. research teams to advance quantum computing, sensing, and communications. By pooling resources and expertise, the initiative aims to accelerate breakthroughs that could transform fields from secure communications to drug discovery.

The Cooperative Institute for Modeling the Earth System (CIMES), in collaboration with NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL), offers undergraduates an 8–9 week summer research experience in atmospheric, oceanic, and earth system science. Interns work closely with Princeton and NOAA scientists on projects such as climate risk modeling, ocean–atmosphere interactions, river networks, and extreme weather events, while gaining access to high-performance computing, seminars, and mentoring.

🔬 NSF & UKRI Launch $10M Quantum Chemistry Partnership

The U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) are funding eight joint, $10M research projects to explore how quantum phenomena influence chemical reactions and molecular systems. By developing new molecular-based qubits and quantum technologies, these collaborations aim to advance computing, sensing, and secure communications.

Graduate students and early-career researchers will gain hands-on training in quantum optics, molecular spectroscopy, and nanofabrication, while the partnership strengthens long-term U.S.-U.K. scientific ties and advances the goals of the Technology Prosperity Deal. A strong research project doesn’t just fill time—it fills a gap. Here’s how to identify a niche that’s meaningful and impactful:

  • Scan the Landscape: Read recent review articles to see what’s known, what’s debated, and where questions still linger.

  • Spot the Gaps: Look for underexplored methods, unanswered “why/how” questions, or overlooked systems that connect to your field.

  • Play to Your Strengths: Choose topics that align with skills you already have or are excited to build.

  • Think Relevance: Ask how the research matters: scientifically, socially, or technologically. The best niches are both narrow and significant.
