💰 Private Sector Now Dominates U.S. Research Funding
New data from the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES) shows a major shift in who’s funding science in America.
In 2022, private-sector research spending surged to $125 billion (50%), far outpacing the $86 billion (34%) from the federal government and $40 billion (16%) from state and local sources.
Back in 2010, the landscape looked very different: the private sector funded just 38%, while the federal government covered over 45% of all research expenditures.
This rapid rise in private investment is largely fueled by booming interest in AI, machine learning, clean energy, and biotech innovation.
Tip of the Day

🌉 Don’t Burn Bridges with People You Dislike
Whether in school, research, or internships, you’ll inevitably cross paths with people you don’t click with. While it’s tempting to cut ties, staying professional and courteous can save you from missed opportunities down the road. Here’s why:
Science Is a Small World: People move around in academia and industry and you never know if today’s rival is tomorrow’s hiring manager.
Reputation Follows You: How you handle conflict speaks volumes. Staying respectful builds your professional image.
Collaboration Beats Isolation: You don’t have to be friends, but cooperating opens doors to projects, publications, and networking.
You Might Change Your Mind: First impressions aren’t always right. In fact, some of the best collaborators come from rocky starts.
They Know People Too: Even if you’ll never work with them again, they’re connected to others who might hear your name later.
